Calperum Outback Experience
Aug 16-18, 2013
Kayaking, boating, bird watching, Aboriginal culture, tree health surveys, water testing, kangaroo and emu spotting are part of a host of activities for international students to experience on a weekend away hosted by g'day [sa] and the Rotary Club of Eastwood.
Calperum Station, 242,800 hectares, is located just outside Renmark on a tributary to the River Murray. The station is managed by the Australian Landscape Trust as a sustainable development. It is unique as a farm in that it has a strong environmental and educational focus. The tree, bird, animal and fish life in the area are amazing.
Students will stay on the station in bunk house accommodation. These are 10 four-bunk rooms with mattresses and pillows but students will need to bring sleeping bags or doonas, sheets and pillow cases. There are shared - separate men's and women's - bathroom facilities with showers, hand basins and toilets. Meals will be served in the dining room in the homestead. As this will be mid-winter, students will need to bring warm clothing. Men and women can be housed separately or together in the bunk rooms and friends will be able to stay together. There are likely to be sufficient rooms for married couples to have separate rooms. The Rotarians will be staying in separate accommodation on the property.
The students will be engaged in hands-on environmental activities during the stay. This will include water testing in lakes, rivers and bores, testing for tree health and marking their GPS locations on the river flats.
There will also be opportunities for kayaking, boating, observing bird and animal life (188 species of birds have been recorded, including emus, along with kangaroos and smaller marsupials and reptiles in abundance). In the unlikely event of rain, alternative programs will be offered. On the Friday evening, dinner will be served en route at Waikerie and hosted by the Rotary Club of Waikerie.
The trip will be limited to 20 students.
The tour cost includes transport, accommodation and all meals. Halal and other diets will be catered for. On Saturday night, some of the students will cook their favourite specialities from their home countries as a thank you to the Rotary Club and station staff who will join us for dinner.
Tour will leave Adelaide by coach on Friday, 16th August at 4 pm from outside Stamford Plaza Hotel, 150 North Terrace and return by coach on Sunday, 18th August at 4 pm
Cost: $ 220.00 (GST inclusive)
Students who offer to cook a national dish can have a further discount of $30, i.e. $190.00. All the major ingredients will be purchased by Rotary at its cost. The discount is for the students' cooking effort and any specialty ingredients needed in the recipes. Eight students will be selected to cook
A photographic competition will be held with Study Adelaide awarding prizes for the best photographs.
Contact Euan Miller: euan@gdaysa.com.au to register for the trip and payment details will be provided. The booking will be confirmed after payment is received.
